Health And Beauty Benefits Of Eating Soaked Almonds

August 1, 2014 / 55 Comments / Shailja Vashisht

Hi Everyone,

I do not even remember since when Almonds have been a part of my diet. The one thing that I do remember is that every morning my Mom used to force us (me and my sister) to eat a handful of almonds. We reluctantly pushed them in our mouths, and swallowed down; but no more. Now, as I have continued that habit of eating soaked almonds, I know the numerous benefits of this wonder nut and the reason why my Mom pushed us (actually helped) to set up this practice. I am no doctor so do not expect those tough terminologies (that require sincere efforts to pronounce them correctly). I will share with you whatever I know and whatever I have learnt in due course of continuing this habit.

But first of all let’s see how I soak almonds in water

How to soak almonds in water

Take 7-8 almonds (per person), put them in a wide bowl. Pour some water until almonds are completely immersed. Cover the bowl with a lid, and keep it at room temperature overnight. Some people like to keep this bowl in refrigerator but I would not suggest doing so as that hampers enzyme release, and decreases almonds nutritive value. After being soaked overnight (at room temperature) almonds get bigger in size so you need to put some extra water that would help in their expansion.

Now the next question that would have come in your mind might be:

Why soak almonds in water:

– Soaking almonds activate their enzymes.
– Soaking can unlock more health benefits and make almonds easier to digest.
– Soaking almonds increases their nutritive value.
– Soaking almonds makes them softer and easier to chew, mainly a benefit to children and seniors.
– Soaking almonds eliminates the toxic materials present in their outer shell so that we can get the most out of them.

Health And Beauty Benefits Of Eating Soaked Almonds

As I have said, I have been eating soaked almonds for an indefinite time. Almonds are my first food of the day. I remove their outer skin and eat them on an empty stomach every morning, chewing them properly. Eating almonds empty stomach make our body absorb more nutrients from them. However, if you do not want to eat them on an empty stomach you can mix them with salads or other foods.

Health And Beauty Benefits Of Eating Soaked Almonds

Easy to digest: Soaking almonds overnight makes them release more of their vitamins, which allows those nutrients and vitamins to be more easily absorbed by your body. So when are completely absorbed, they become easy to digest.

Energy Booster: Almonds are considered “superfood” because they are full of nutrients, and perfect snack for people who are on a diet. It is one such nut that contains a wide range of nutritive elements such fiber, proteins, Vitamin E, and omega-3 and -6 fatty acids. Eating soaked almonds make your body absorb more nutrients from them, and keep you energized for longer hours. Almonds are also a rich source of folic acid, so some people believe that these nuts are best for pregnant ladies.

Memory Booster: You must have heard elders advising kids to eat almonds if they want to do well in exams. Well the reason behind this advice is that almonds are considered a brain tonic. These can sharpen the memory and improve the intelligence especially of kids as their brain is at growing stage. The more manure you give to a sapling the more tall and healthy it will grow.

Good for Heart: Almonds help in controlling cholesterol level, which is good for heart. The magnesium content present in almonds helps in preventing heart attacks. Also, Vitamin E that is present in abundant in almonds helps in reducing the risk of heart diseases

Skin Glow: As I have said almonds are a rich source of nutrients. If you eat more nutritive food it will show an impact on your skin tone. Vitamin E that is present in almonds acts as an antioxidant and improves skin tone. Almonds also speed up formation of new skin cells, and improve skin texture.

Prevent Pre Mature Ageing: Eating soaked almonds empty stomach delays ageing process and helps you remain younger-looking for long period. Vitamin E and other anti-oxidants present in these nuts can eliminate harmful free radicals from your body, thereby making your skin healthier.

Hair Nourish(er): Almonds nutritive content is also beneficial for hair. Proteins, which are present in rich quantity in almonds, make hair strong, reduce hair fall and help in growth of new follicles. If you hair are healthy from roots no one can stop you from having shiny tresses.

Being a senior citizen – taking almonds since long. There are two types of almonds – one which is called desi almond and is small size the other one is bigger one – it is said that desi almonds are good in quality – kindly clarify.

    Thanks and regards.

Hi Sir, desi almonds are enriched in almond oil so they have more nutritional value. But as compared to bigger size almonds desi almonds are slightly bitter in taste . Mostly desi almonds are used to extract almond oil which further is used for eating and massaging purpose.

      I hope this helps !

Eating soaked Almonds is fine. But throwing away the skin. Maybe the skin has nutritive value which hasn’t yet been known. Evasive answers are given when the health benefits of also having the skin of soaked Almonds is asked. Like in the case of Eggs. It is now established that the yolk and albumen together make a healthy combination . Earlier it was suggested that yolk causes increased cholesterol and should be avoided and only the white of the egg is healthy . In throwing away the skin of Almonds I hope we’re not rejecting something that is beneficial. Have you had similar doubts?

Unsoaked almonds generate more heat in the body. If you do not see any adverse effects then you can continue eating them that way.
